The City of Los Angeles is a significant step closer to implementing the ban of single-use plastic bags approved by the City Council in  May of 2012.

The Bureau of Sanitation completed its Environmental Impact Report (EIR) this January and concluded that the proposed project would not result in any significant adverse impacts on the environment but would result in beneficial impacts on air quality, biological resources, and hydrology and water quality.

Large stores are allowed to phase out plastic bags over six months and then provide free paper bags for another six months after which they will charge 10 cents per paper bag. Small retailers will have a year to phase out plastic.

It now awaits City Hall certification and adoption.  Public Review Period: The Draft EIR is available for public review from January 25, 2013 to March 11, 2013. You can read it at http://www.lacitysan.org under "What's New".
