Aug17TraderJoesFor those of you who live on the eastern side of The Neighborhood News border (Crenshaw, Arlington, Normandy) and who have been agitating for a Trader Joes closer than Culver City or La Brea, agitate no more!  Trader Joe's is opening by mid-August in the nearly completed USC Village at the corner of Jefferson and Hoover, a stone's throw (or 15-minute ride) away.   A smaller format Target has already opened.

According to a statement made by Laurie Stone (an associate senior vice president for real estate and asset management at USC) to The Los Angeles Daily News:

“More than 50 percent of the retail will be open by August 17.  The $700 million development will bring over 100,000 square feet of retail space, five-story residence halls for 2,700 students, a fitness center, and a drugstore to the former site of the University Village shopping center. There will also be a collection of eateries laid out around a central, open-air plaza. Designed by Harley Ellis Devereaux, the buildings will be in a style dubbed 'collegiate Gothic.'”

An additional perk? Thirty percent of the permanent workforce will be from the local community with no less than 10% from minority backgrounds.
