From “Hummingbird”
“Hummingbird
motionless
letting God’s light take the chill off his feathers
He doesn’t do it often
but even he has to do it sometimes
for it is in that momentwhere he seems most vulnerable
that his true power will manifest
And this tiny speck of being
looms as large as the Universe
God is always slipping me lessons.”
Gregory Earl Binion

Greg Binion lived a life true to his artistic and independent soul. Focused and passionate from the moment he was born, he earned a black belt in Karate at the age of 12 and lived his life as a painter, poet, gardener, singer, dancer, photographer, member of the Black Panther party, ex body guard to Angela Davis and in his final years as a committed Buddhist. On Monday,  August 10th, Greg died of a heart attack
Greg’s passion was art and he created incredibly beautiful polished wood sculptures as well as beautiful paintings.  He was also a poet and Thespian.  With his partner, James Eddy, as the Uhuru Brothers, Greg provided landscape maintenance services to many in the area.
Although Greg fathered three children, Malika, Justin and Allana, he was separated from them. His prayers and chants were answered when one of the estranged children Jason, his only son, contacted him. He said the reconciliation was one of the most profoundly moving and significant experiences of his full life.
Greg was in the process of arranging a show of his work at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center later this year.  The remaining family; his mother Millicent, sister Kimberly and brother Kenneth, hope to soon realize this vision.
