In June the UNNC Recreation & Parks planning committee and the community, approved designs for the Leslie Shaw Park renovation and although it is considered a pocket park, (a small scale), plans are to make this park a hub for community events and activities. The renovations such as disable accessibility for shaded playground equipment, more shade, grills and tables, fitness equipment, and a walking trail, will make Leslie Shaw Park family friendly. Surrounding it are several schools, churches, the library, a senior citizen building and a new apartment building ensuring that it will be well used.
Sandra Pruitt, the UNNC Chair for Recreation & Parks and Norman Gillmore UNNC area resident rep. have been in meetings with the city staff of Recreation & Parks to find the funding necessary to bring the concept into realization. In the coming months, the planning committee will be asking our community to get involved in these fundraising efforts. Currently playground equipment has been set aside and is waiting for funding. This is a real community effort so if you want to participate in any way, including giving donations to this important community resource, please contact Sandra Pruitt 323-735-6006
