We Endorse Jan Perry For Congress

janperryLos Angeles, Calif.  Former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry, recently declared her candidacy for the United States Congress to fill the seat vacated by Representative Karen Bass.

The newly drawn 37th Congressional District includes a large portion of Perry’s former Council District. “I am running because all we see in Congress is gridlock and inaction on important issues like health care, climate change, and voting rights,” said Perry.

“I will go to Washington to be a fierce advocate for working families, ensure they receive a fair return on their hard-earned tax dollars, and to swiftly and humanely get unhoused people off of the street and into housing with services,” she continued.

Perry has 30 years of experience as a public servant in Los Angeles. During that time, she spearheaded the construction of light rail through South Los Angeles, the creation of nearly 6,000 units of affordable housing, brought 90,000 new jobs to the city with substantial community benefit agreements, and generated $52 million in net new tax revenue for reinvestment into communities that had long been neglected and deprived of the fruits of economic expansion. She is viewed as one of the most effective and visionary legislators in recent memory.

Her hands-on experience with homelessness and infrastructure development is unequaled among her peers.

“Jan Perry is singularly qualified to serve in congress. She is a skilled and innovative legislator who has worked tirelessly to bring major infrastructure projects and goodpaying jobs to Los Angeles,” said Estela Lopez, Skid Row non-profit executive. “She is steadfast in her convictions, has an impeccable moral compass, and understands how to work a bureaucracy to bring services to her constituents. Our nation is at a critical crossroads, and she is the right person for our time.”

Perry currently serves as the executive director for two non-profits that address future infrastructure, economic development, and environmental challenges and support agencies that serve Los Angeles’ unhoused population. From July 2013 to December 2018, she served as the general manager of the City of Los Angeles’ Economic and Workforce Development Department.
