Police investigate fatal drive-by shooting in Miracle Mile area

An investigation was under way Monday to track down whoever killed an 18-year-old man in a drive-by shooting in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles, police said. The shooting occurred around 2:35 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South La Brea Avenue and Olympic Boulevard, said Officer Karen Rayner, a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman. The victim, Juan Segura, was walking down the 1000 block of South La Brea Avenue when a car pulled up alongside him and his friend and at least one of the car's occupants opened fire, she said. Segura was shot in the chest, collapsed on the sidewalk and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Rayner said. His friend was not injured. Police "believe that there may have been many witnesses who fled the area after the shooting but may possess valuable information that could help lead detectives to the suspects," Rayner said. The intersection where the slaying occurred was filled with motorists at the time, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to contact Wilshire Area Homicide Detectives Frank Carrillo or Javier Hernandez at 213-473-0446 or 877-LAPD-24-7.
