Council District 10 and the United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (UNNC) district were chosen this year to host the 9th Annual Citywide HPOZ Conference, sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning and the Los Angeles Conservancy.
The all-day event was held on May 7th at the McCarty Memorial Christian Church, a beautiful, historic structure on West Adams
Boulevard. The event provided an opportunity for all citizens to learn about the City’s HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, or historic district) program through a series of morning seminars and afternoon neighborhood walking tours. Approximately 100 people attended the event, with Councilmember Herb Wesson giving opening remarks. Seminars this year included topics such as drought-tolerant landscaping for historic houses, city enforcement of the building and zoning codes, and conducting research on historic properties. Three tours in the area were offered at the conference - the stately homes of West Adams Terrace HPOZ, the charming bungalows of Jefferson Park, and the 1887 Starr Farmhouse, a city Historic Cultural Monument and one of the area’s oldest structures. Awards are also given at the event to recognize outstanding efforts in the HPOZs. The UNNC area is home to many historic districts and individually important buildings, which made it a natural choice to host the conference. With the pending adoption of the Jefferson Park HPOZ, fully one-half of the UNNC area will be included in HPOZs, one of the highest concentrations in the City.
